Some of you may have heard about the Reddit API Protest and Blackout that has started. And that many subreddits are going private. Some of you might know what this means and some might not. For those that do not I am going to give a very brief explanation and also tell you how it will affect you.
Basically an API is a way that a program can access functions that are part of the "core" of Reddit. 3rd party mobile applications, bots, etc use these APIs for various reasons. Recently Reddit management made the choice to make policy changes that would introduce fees to some of these 3rd parties that would cost them 10's of millions of dollars a year when some of them collect no revenue at all. Because of this, and because Reddit management would not budget on their new rules, the Reddit community of moderators decided to protest by "going dark" or causing a blackout by making their subs private.
How this will affect you is that you might find many of your favorite subs now inaccessible. We don't know how long this will be.
We did want to let you know that r/wheelchairs will not be joining in the blackout. This is NOT because we don't support the other moderators in their vision, it's because we feel that this sub is too important to our userbase and their quality of life to not be available to them.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Your mod team.
