Belief in the sense of ascribing more probability to a particular possibility than to any ONE of its alternatives.
Post Body

I think an example will make this clearer. Say backpacks come in three colors, black, green, or brown. If I say, "I believe his backpack is black", that would generally be taken to mean "I think it's likelier that his backpack is black than that it's any color other than black." But is there a single word that fits the blank in "I ____ his backpack is black" that expresses the belief that black is the likeliest color of his backpack (i.e. likelier than either green or brown, though not necessarily likelier than the two other possibilities combined).
