I read it more than 20 years ago. I think the first story was a space war between giant warships. I remember them talking about how the deflector shields change color when hit. I think it ends with a ship being destroyed and people ejecting in safety pods.

The other story I remember was a super soldier who left war to live in a backwater planet. Like almost wild west level. The enemies tracked him somehow and attacked the town, possibly killing his wife.

I remember he had basically shut off all his tech to live normal, then after the attack he powered up almost god like abilities.

He was turning people inside out with micro gravitiy wells, shunting parts of them into alternate dimensions. Insane weaponry.

It was like a bunch of ants against a steamroller.

They realized he was a super soldier class, but he destroyed them in seconds though they were trying to run, surrender

That's all I remember.
