SOLVED SOLVED SOLVED Thanks
Looking for a novel published in the 1970s/1980s set in Victorian Edinburgh. The story takes place in an institution for girls. There is at least one murder.
Stylistically it was high Gothic, very dark in tone and highly charged. It has sapphic undertones. Rather Jekyl and Hyde in feel.
I remember a paperback with a Gothic painted scene on the cover. It had the appearance of a Virago book but I don't think it was from them. It might have been a Scottish niche publisher (possibly not certainly).
I'm sure the author was a womai would love to read it again if any of you can help.
