I'm looking for a short story that a friend read to me several years ago. My memory is fuzzy, but the plot is set in the old west about a farmer who approaches his banker for an extension on his loan payments because the crops haven't been growing and the well is dry. The banker says he needs to see the land in person, so the farmer and banker travel there. On the way the farmer talks of future plans, "providing the creek don't rise". When they get to the farm, the land is fertile and the crops are bountiful. The farmer leads the banker to the well and pushes him in and he is eaten by a monster, and this sacrifice keeps the crops bountiful.
If anyone knows anything about where I can find this it would be much appreciated.
