YA Novel (?) in which there was a group of people who had each dedicated their lives to memorizing a book because a good portion of world knowledge had been squandered

I cannot stop thinking about this book, but all I can remember about it was that there was a vaguely cult like group of people that I believe the main character encounters, and each of them had an entire book memorized. The reason they memorized the books was because many books had been destroyed, I'm pretty sure by some kind of fascists, and also I think because they didn't want the knowledge to fall into the wrong hands. And each of them were working to stay safe and alive and everything and keep these books memorized so they could eventually pass them on if needed. And there were like, apprentices who were learning a book from one of the people in the group who was close to dying to make sure that the knowledge was passed on. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this was a subplot and had little to do with the main part of the story, but this is going to bother me until i figure out what it is. Any help is appreciated!
