I don't remember everything of the books, its a bit difficult to explain but ill try.

From what I remember its about a girl who comes across this dragon-like creature (though they aren't called dragons) and eventually gets specific magic that kind of is a force bubble(?).
she later can turn into one of these creatures, and finds that there's intelligent and 'dumb' ones, and they say the dumb ones 'gave into their wild side' or something like that.

Later there's stuff with time-travel, and one of the 'dumb' dragons I think actually did that and its just his mind is in the future or past where it tried to help her. Eventually she loses her magic and has to use that bubble power on the ashes of a dragon to absorb the power and regain her magic?

I think its been a few years since i've read the books, but I would really appreciate finding out which one it was.
