I’ve been trying to remember this book series from my childhood. Important info: has to be appropriate for elementary school children, has to be written before 2003, was a series (I think). My 4th grade teacher read it to us in class and I’ve been trying to find out what the book/series is called for probably 6 years now.
The main things I can remember are: -It’s about a young woman in the 1800s who moves to rural Pennsylvania (I’m pretty sure it was PA but it could be another eastern state) -She moves into her uncle’s cabin (could be another family member, but I think it was an old uncle’s cabin he wasn’t using anymore). I think the cabin was on a hill -The cabin burns down at one point -She befriends her neighbors, one of whom is a deaf girl -She and the deaf girl get trapped under snow and they keep squeezing each other’s hand to stay conscious/alive -I think they’re found by a dog -There’s a party (maybe a Christmas celebration) and the father of the deaf girl makes a joke/anecdote about it being so cold outside that when he whistles, the notes get frozen so he brings them inside and sets them on the mantle to melt -I think she was getting courted/engaged to the son in the family but she wasn’t happy about it -She gets kidnapped (possibly runs away of her own free will but I’m pretty sure it’s kidnapping) by Native Americans -After a period of time, she ends up marrying someone in the tribe and becomes pregnant
That’s about all I can remember. Any help is appreciated!
