This book will at least 15 years old, probably older. I believe it was science fiction and possibly part of a trilogy. I'm thinking it was either young adult or an easy read/shorter adult book. I live in the United States

The opening chapter talks about a guy who is looking at his shower/tub because he needs to bathe but he's afraid to. The shower/tub is designed so he can put in a bunch of settings and it will wash him but the last time he tried to use it, the machine tried to drown him (possibly burn him? I don't exactly remember). He ended up in the hospital last time but no one believes him that the machine malfunctioned and now he's afraid to use it again.
