Looking for a book about two teens on a field trip who encounter Native American Spirits.

Read this book tons of times when I was younger and for the life of me I can’t figure out the name of it. There were two guys who got paired together on a field trip to the desert. One of the guys was nerdy and the other guy was kinda upset to be paired with him. I don’t know if they got lost or what but they ended up being guided by Native American spirits and the nerdy guy was able to help them get back to the bus.
Anyone know what the heck I’m talking about?
