Help finding childhood sci-if book series

It was a elementary school sci-fi book series about a group of kids forced to work off a debt after their parents die in transit. I'm pretty sure there are 4 planets that surround a black hole or something similar. i remember on the second planet they work as caretakers at an aquarium, and in the end i think the main character goes to explore said black hole.
