What has caused this annoying little change where your inactive window on windows hides the active conversations online status after a few seconds??

Recently whatsapp seems to have changed something where you used to be able to have a chat open in an inactive windows and see their online status. Now you have to keep clicking on the whatsapp window and triggering your online status in order to see theirs. Very damn annoying! How to disable this change?
