Am I a bad person because I don't know who or what to believe in?

My mom and I just had a huge argument over belief systems, she's not Christian but is spiritual and I'm borderline atheist. Her argument was the creator of the universe is a real being that's gotten her as far as she did in life and my argument is I simply don't think I believe in such. If we create our own reality, and our own karma, how could there be some omniscient being dictating all of that? I just don't buy it. If anything i'd give more credit to the "higher self". I'm all for creating a belief system that keeps you sane and gives you something to believe in in this twisted world. But I just don't feel the same and can't stop crying because I feel as if I'm a bad person now. Any advice?
