Hi all,
I recently got a new job and in two weeks will have to start commuting 90 mins each way, at first once per week and possibly becoming 2-3 times per week over the next year or so.
I'm leasing a 2020 Hyundai Kona EV that will be unsuitable for the trip for two reasons: the range is just barely enough to cover the round trip, and probably won't be enough come winter, and seeing as the car is a lease with a 12,000 mile / year limit, I would quickly exceed the mileage allotment.
So one obvious option is to swap cars with my fiance, who drives a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with 110,000 miles. She has owned the car since around 50,000 miles, and just last year the dealership replaced her engine for free under the extended warranty program for oil burning 2.4L motors. She likes the Kona, and the payment is very low so she's ok with taking it on. However I am not a huge fan of her car, namely the way it drives. But that whole scheme is probably the sensible option.
An alternative is to sell my fiance's paid-off Sonata find myself something more up my alley, namely European, and drive the wheels off of it. I'm a pretty competent home mechanic so reliability isn't my top concern, however it is still a factor as I don't want to spend my time constantly fixing cars.
My wish list is ranked as follows: 1.) Comfortable seating for a 6'2" 185 lb man 2.) Mostly-depreciated (i.e. I want to buy something cheap that doesn't have much room to fall in value when I put a crap load of miles on it) 3.) Relatively comfortable ride, if not very comfortable 4.) Fuel economy 5.) Reliability / low costs of ownership 6.) Bluetooth phone system
Thoughts?
