I'm moving from Wisconsin to Oregon and currently don't have a car. I work remotely and so I don't need the car for commuting. I also do a lot of walking/biking, and don't expect to use it very much for running errands like getting groceries.
I really am just looking for a simple, reliable SUV that can transport me and some things across the country in the next month or two, where it will then likely sit on the street for most of the week, then, on weekends, be loaded up with gear and driven 1-5 hours outside of the city for hiking and camping trips -- so mostly just driving on highways and occasionally used for getting from point A to point B if I decide to visit friends or need to do some errand around the city that Amazon can't deliver.
It does not need to last me forever, I don't care what happens to it, I don't need to resell it.
I'm expecting my income to increase substantially in the next few months, so I'm looking for something that is pure affordability and utility, which I can buy with cash now ($5000 or less), then, in a couple years when I'm making more, revisit the car market and get a "real" car I intend to keep for a longer period of time.
I don't know anything about cars other than videos I watched on YouTube about how to buy used ones -- and some anecdotal advice from a friend who said Toyotas and Hondas are reliable.
Any suggestions around specific brands, makes, models, and mileage is very much appreciated!
