Should I buy a 20 year old car with 200k miles on it?
Post Body

Hello everyone!,

I have found a 1996 Mercedes-Benz C220 with 200k miles that goes for $1400. The interior is very well kept, the AC works, all the lights work and the only issue with the electronics is that the pop up antenna on the back it is bent on wont retract.

The owner said that the left side was crashed into a few years ago but that it was mostly cosmetic damage. The engine sounds fairly loud (im not sure if its supposed to sound so loud) and the breaks dont work very well but there is very little rust. It is almost like it takes a few extra seconds to work, this is the biggest issue I have with the car.

I will be taking the car to a mechanic today to see what his opinion is, the owner is a family friend and is being very cooperative with the price. He is actually taking my brother's kayak as a down payment so I really will only pay $900 for it.

I should also add that the car hasn't been used very often for a few years and will probably need a new set of tires.

I really only need this car for making 3 hour trips to major cities in Texas for job interviews. I am a recent college graduate so I should be able to afford a newer car later on this year. Which means, that a car will only need to last me 10k-20k miles. I would love to put another 100k on it but im not sure if that could be cost effective.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
