I have been reading threads upon threads about all of the above cars. We've been in an Outback for nine years and just need a change.
We are 60, so not exactly needing a Porsche or a Maserati, but when looking at replacing our Outback Touring XT (which retails for around $46) we realized we were right in that $50K region.
I had thought an EV would be nice, until I started to think about molesting my 100 amp panel and trying to run 240v above ground to my driveway (I can't trench 24" deep as I live on solid ledge in Greenwich CT).
So, I thought Mercedes or an Audi might be nice. I don't like the TV screen on the Audi Q5. The thing sits on the dash and blocks your view. It is a hazard IMHO as anything being loaded in from the back, like a 2x4x8, which sits well on an Outback, will destroy the TV screen!
We are so clumsy I can just see us smashing the thing. Then the cup holder, no thing for sunglasses, base seats might not be comfy. We test drive the Etron but not th Q5 as we once owned one, so 'get' the concept.
Volvo sort of underwhelming. Not very powerful, the infotainment seemed wonky. Is that us?
Our nearby dealer is in White Plains. Our Subaru comes from same company. They always give us a loaner which is really important as we only use one car.
I had wanted to try th4e Mazda CX90, but was told by the New Rochelle dealer no way Jose on a loaner. This is a deal breaker for us.
MB: we tried the GLB250 (gas and electric, but as mentioned EV not doable), GLC300. Honestly, they seemed kind of cheaply built. You can tell when a car is well built, and the cheaper MBs are cheap. Plastic seats, a lot of shiny stuff it feels like a charade. The motors were not very strong.
Our Greenwich dealer is so pinched for space they have a FT guy directing traffic. If I bought one of those $45-50K MBs, I'd never get a loaner. The sales guy super lazy. We are probably going to avoid MB.
We once had a Cayenne S and loved that car. We had to take that for an Audi A4 Avant station wagon when we moved into an old stone house with a low ceiling garage and the top would not make it under the door.
I had friends with the base Cayenne, and I test drove one, it was not very strong. I have red here on Reddit the Macan base is a VW Golf engine and an Audi A4 chassis, with a nicer transmission. Now, we drive the Macan and it was fun, but I worry about oil change costs, and getting a loaner from the nearby Greenwich Porsche dealer, as they are super cramped over there, and I'll bet a .loaner is gonna be hard to get with a base.
I then found a Grecale Maserati for $56 demo that had 4k miles. Wow", we thought. When we drove the car, it has a lot of stuff in there that could break. I read here in Reddit about Gremlins popping up. The oil change about $1000 scares us. The thing did not seem that fast, and was loud. The seats were not even leather. No sunroof. We are leery.
The Jag we see is high-priced, so I was looking for a demo, CRO. I found one and it was gone same day. We have not driven, but try to justify the cost. I think they would treat us well, as the dealer is Prestige in White Plains same as our Subaru.
The Lexus' were weak motors, and plastic seats not leather. I 'get' they are reliable. I question our ability to live with a car more than a lease term of 36 months as they start to run differently as they age (cars in general).
I hear they had an RX with 6 cals not now apparently. They all seem wedge-shaped and strangely dated, or is that just us?
I had high hopes for Genesis. I went to the brand new dealership in White Plains (will name name the place as this is sort of negative) but the whole visit was a waste of time. The salesman was a manager. Schlubby he was, and a braggart too. He lifted nary a finger to sell us on their car or service. The test drive he had no idea where we should go. We went literally about three blocks in traffic, turned up a residential street, switched places so we could both test, and drove back.
I got a f/u call from another manager and told him of our experience. They never called us again. I then read lots of comments about Hyundai and Genesis being one in the same, and the new brand might be an attempt by the former to refrain band traction or a better reputation. So some posts go the service is terrible at Genesis. This is upsetting as I can live with lazy sales people, but we are counting on the dealer to back up the car, give us a loaner, etc.=
I don't know what to do now. So confusing.
Any tips or pointers much appreciated. Sorry to go on and on but thought if I did not mention I did some home work I'd get my head chopped off here. (Probably will anyway :-)
