My boyfriend (25M, UK) and I (24F, US) are strongly considering applying for a K1 visa for him to live with me in the US. We met online 14 months ago and fell for each other very quickly which led to meeting up three times, each trip lasting about two weeks. He graduated uni in June and we feel the next step is to move in together. He doesn’t have much work experience, doesn’t want to go to graduate school yet, and isn’t in tech, which makes it difficult to get an education or work visa in the US. I’m not willing to move to the UK as I am in graduate school in the US and going down a path for licensure in the medical field which will not transfer over to other countries. We want to spend our lives together. We don’t really value marriage or weddings or anything like that but do see each other on our futures. We’ve talking about getting married and have a family one day but it admittedly the K1 looks more like our most promising path to be together which is what we want more than anything right now. We also understand that the K1 visa process is expensive and involves a long waiting period (up to 15 months) which we will happily wait for and spend the money for as we don’t expect to fall out of love in the meantime. We don’t have a lot of money or our lives ironed out but we know the next step in the relationship involves closing the gap. We’re thinking of having the bare minimum legally required wedding (two witnesses) in the 90 day period if the visa is approved. I’d love to hear people’s personal stories or thoughts on visas to close the gap.
