My boyfriend and I met online a long time ago in highschool through a web application called Interpals which was meant for language exchange. He was from California and I was from Korea. We fell in love despite not knowing each others voices, not knowing each others faces, and had only ever chatted with each other (Think Netflix's Blind Love series) He had confessed to me first but I rejected him due to the fears of long distance. But his sincerity and persistence eventually persuaded me into giving the relationship a chance!
That was probably the best decision of my life as we are now planning on getting married soon! He's found his dream job in Hong Kong and I've been working towards being able to find a job there as well so that we can support each other not only financially but also emotionally! We've been through so many ups and downs and have seen the worst and best of each other as we both climbed through the emotional trauma we call University haha. As our journey of a long distance relationship is coming to an end, I've been compiling some of our trips together so that we could look back on them together and laugh about all the fun times. Whenever we had arguments, I would look back on our short video clips or photos to remind myself that the bad times are transient and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I wanted to let everyone know that no matter what happens or how tough the relationship gets, as long as you guys communicate and trust each other, you two will be able to overcome anything.
Every summer and every winter, we were unsure of whether we would be able to meet due to financial or family reasons. Yet somehow, he was able to make it work. Every single year, he found a way either by saving his allowances, working part time jobs, tutoring students at his school, selling online gaming services, selling his clothes, he was able to find a way for us to meet. I would work part time jobs, beg my parents for allowance, or eat cheaper meals to save on food money and contribute it towards meeting him. We were able to travel to Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, UK, Seoul, and San Francisco together through our undying efforts.
We argued often over the stupidest things, but a quote that his grandma had told me was "When you two are arguing, you aren't fighting each other, but rather fighting against the argument together".
To this day, this quote has taught me to put past our differences on the trivial things and look at the big picture of one day being together forever. It's been a long and wild ride, but finally we're able to move together towards our next journey together! I hope that my story has been able to inspire some of you guys to try meeting someone online! To give online relationships a chance and to know that they can work out!
