patellofemoral pain syndrome

Does anyone have any advice for curing patellofemoral pain syndrome? I injured both my knees 8 years ago and they still have not recovered. I tried physical therapy and sports massages with little to no help. I've tried icing it recently which seems to help a little. Nothing shows up on the MRI but my doctor suggested arthroscopy as a last resort.
Any suggestions? And has anyone undergone arthroscopy that could share their experience?
