Context: My fiancé's best friend and bridesmaid, Zoe, used to date the Maid of Honor's (Carly's) husband, Caleb, in high school and at the beginning of college. We're all between 26 and 28 years old, and Carly is a very close cousin of my fiancé.
Around Thanksgiving last year, Zoe told my fiancé about her past relationship with Caleb, explaining that it didn't end well, and they haven't spoken since. When my fiancé asked Zoe how she wanted to handle any interactions with Caleb, Zoe said it wasn't a big deal and that she would only bring up their past relationship if Caleb initiated the conversation. According to Zoe, their history was irrelevant given how long it had been since they actually communicated.
Fast forward to today, just two days before their Bachelorette trip, Zoe asks what she should do if Carly brings up Caleb in conversation. For example, if she sees a family picture of Caleb, should she act like she doesn't know him? My fiancé reminded Zoe of what she had said before about it being irrelevant, but Zoe now feels it would be a "lie of omission" if she doesn't tell Carly.
My fiancé found Zoe's approach inconsiderate, especially considering some significant life events Carly has been through in the past few years, which Caleb supported her through. Zoe got defensive and, while she claimed to understand my fiancé's perspective, it was clear that she wanted to approach things her way.
Personally, I'm not a fan of how Zoe tried to frame the situation, acting uncomfortable with being dishonest to Carly when it seems like she's doing it in bad faith and forcing an uncomfortable ultimatum on my fiancé regarding a situation she could've addressed nine months ago when my fiancé first asked her.
So now, two days before their Bachelorette trip, Zoe is trying to make this a big issue, and my fiancé doesn't know what to do. Any advice or opinions on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
