Compare selected date with current date

Hi guys, I've got another issue.
I'm validating a form client side, if an inputs value is wrong the input turns red with white text, if it's value is correct it remains or turns back to black on white.
Is there a way to do this with a date input?
I can access the date input and display it's value, but I cannot seem to get it to compare to the "today" variable.
