Tech support: Moxie + controller not working

We are having an issue where it seems like the toy pairs to the controller, but then when we try to use the controller, nothing happens. Has anyone run into this?
Yes, I know there’s the app, but sometimes it’s not possible to have a phone out and using the little controller is more discrete.
