I just moved into my 2nd apartment in DC. The first one never had window screens in my unit but they weren’t necessary since the unit was next to a busy street and would just intake car exhaust if opened. Lived there >1 year.
The 2nd apartment doesn’t have window screens either and the windows are actually usable. Browsing around online revealed this - https://ota.dc.gov/page/summer-housing-code-protections.
“DC law requires that landlords … Put screens on all doors and windows from March 15 to November 15 of every year.”
Are both apartment buildings breaking the law or is there some kind of year-round exception? Every apartment I’ve lived at before moving to DC has had them and it seems surprising for any apts here to not have them given all the mosquitos & bugs during the summer months.
