I’ve seen a lot of speculation, discussion and wishful thinking the last few months about AG, both here and on the Steam forums. I’ll add my 2 cents and expectations.
Player freedom must come first. This means that the player (General) should have as much strategic and tactical control over his given troops and battle sector as possible. Ability to attack, defend, reposition and deploy at will. I don’t mean sandbox levels, but if Eugen wishes to put us in a high command position, the game should reflect this.
The campaign must have a set end goal. Either this is a gameplay mechanic such as holding for a set amount of “Turns”, Taking designated territory, or accumulating victory or political points to reach a minimum value.
Maps should be consistent and reflect the sector accurately. No random map generation, the same map should be used for a given battle sector or area. This also means maps should be somewhat unique to different areas of the campaign.
Units that do not move should remain deployed between battles if chosen. Basically Units wills remain where you left them from previous engagements. This will also include enemies, wreckage and any other map variables such as blown bridges, destroyed buildings, etc.
In order to combat the fear of a short campaign. Turns should be counted in hours, not days. This way a campaign can still stay within the “3 week” period everyone cries about while also allowing enough strategic freedom and space for narrative events.
The narrative should NOT railroad the players decisions. They should add challenge and flavor, not lock out entire paths. If I’m confident in my abilities to hold, or push. I should be able to risk this instead of be forced by the game to chose otherwise.
