Where to start with historical wargames?

Hi I'm interested in getting started with tabletop historicals. I don't know anything about wargaming whatsoever beyond some basic stuff. I'm looking for a ruleset with a lot of content that places having a fun competitive game over total devotion to historical accuracy. I'm also more interested in the game aspect than in painting minis. I'm probably most interested in the ancient era and the Renaissance era. Does anyone have any suggestions where to start?
