Are Dark Iron Dwarves born as dark iron or were they once regular dwarves?

I have a dwarf shaman already, but I am about to unlock dark iron. I would like to race switch over to dark iron but I'de like to RP some sort of "transition" from my regular dwarf. So I'm just curious what and how dark iron dwarves came to be.
