Travel in late Nov - Dec: Europe or Mediterranean/Middle East

Has anyone had experience traveling this region of the world during early winter? Where did you go or what would you suggest? I feel like being in cold, dark, and rainy cities more north can get boring quickly. I Considered going as far as Instanbul, Egypt, or Israel/Jordan... Any thoughts are appreciated.
