I live for a slumlord who won’t fix anything, and my oven door has been broken since last Nov. While I was cooking last week, the oven door fell open. It got my leg, and caused second-degree burns. It formed 3 large blisters around my knee, and was very painful and sore.
I called out like we’re supposed to the next day (Fri) and contacted my boss. On Sunday night, it hadn’t healed yet and was (GROSS WARNING)…starting to drain. I covered it with burn gel and a padded, waterproof clear film dressing, and called out for the next day (Mon). I don’t work most Saturdays and Sundays, and I legitimately thought that would be enough time heal.
On Monday around noon, my boss texted me to ask if I knew we had inventory this week and that they could really use me. (Not how are you doing? Are you ok?) And no, I didn’t know when exactly inventory would be since no one told me. (Communication here ain’t so great.)
That afternoon, I let my boss know that I could return in the morning if I could wear softer pants. Just while my burns healed over the next few days. I knew my blue jeans would irritate my wounds. I wasn’t asking to wear booty shorts or skin tight leggings. Just softer pants. And despite that being an accommodation that a in-store manager could approve, I was told to call Sedgwick to take a loa.
I looked up the job adjustments form for stores on the Walmart one website. It said that dress code job adjustments can be approved by a store if it’s not a safety risk and doesn’t disrupt customer service.
So why was I told I couldn’t come in the following day until after I had called the accommodation line? Does anyone know anything about a job adjustment or how I could’ve handled the situation?
I read about medical accommodations on the Walmart website, and I knew I didn’t qualify for one. I hadn’t gone to a doctor because it wasn’t a life-threatening emergency. I ended up bandaging my burns and didn’t miss any more work, but still received 4.5 pts. How? Why? WTF? HELP!
