How do customers use gift cards to pay?

I’ve been given a lot of shifts on front end instead of OGP where I usually spend my time and I’ve been given next to no training, per usual lol. I can’t figure out the god damn Walmart gift cards? Sometimes it works by just hitting exact card and having them swipe it, sometimes it makes me scan it? Can someone help me understand bc I’m sick of being chewed out by Karen’s 🙄
