My husband (32M) and I (31F) live in a rural area where jobs are scarce. I just graduated college and honestly can't find a job right now. He works from home and has disability from the Navy, so we are comfortable, but not putting much aside for saving. We live pretty frugally already, I stay on top of the budget and I feel comfortable with that. No debt either. But I'm starting to get anxious timeline wise. Firstly, we'll need to add on a second bedroom for the kid, which will be expensive enough, but then...
What do kids actually need? What does it actually cost? Daycare won't be a thing we need to plan for thankfully, and I feel confident that between the baby shower and the local Buy Nothing groups I won't actually need to buy much for the first few years. Since I'm on state insurance, all the pregnancy and delivery costs will be covered which is also great! I'm of the mindset that kids don't really need like....dozens of toys and brand name clothes and such, but I won't be depriving them of things either. How does the child tax credit work? I see people saying they have 30k in savings and think they need more; is that reasonable or does that have extra padding?
Sorry that this is rambly.
