tl;dr: in order to run VTOLVR on Quest 2 on Oculus Virtual Runtime instead of SteamVR, visit the steam library page for vtolvr and click on the gear icon to the right of the play button. in the launch options bar, type oculus with no spaces or punctuation and X out the menu. that’s all!
if you play vtolvr on the quest 2 via the link cable like myself, you may have noticed how glitchy and stuttery steamVR is whenever it’s running, even when not in game.
the funny thing is, my first handful of sessions in vtolvr, which was my first ever PCVR game, didn’t use steamVR. it just launched and ran. things went weird when one day, the game outright refused to launch in my headset. after some diagnosing, i downloaded steamVR and began using it as my default virtual runtime. all of a sudden, there was an overall performance drop, stuttering everywhere, tracking errors, and affected the game in some way that made it so i couldn’t see the BD loading screen at the beginning (minor point, but it’s a great dev logo)
i searched for a long time trying to find a solution to this issue, and finally, the right person saw when i asked the discord and told me that all I needed to do to return to playing vtolvr in OVR was to go into the steam library game settings and entering oculus in the launch options for vtolvr. no spaces or punctuation, just oculus. it works! i’m now back on the old runtime and performance is notably improved. hooray!!!
i STRONGLY recommend downloading and using Oculus Tray Tool if you aren’t already. if there’s interest, i can talk about how to set that up. my computer is far from VR ready, but i make it work, and i know that i spent a lot of time looking for people with lower-end specs talking about their settings. let me know if you want any help with that :)
thanks again to the discord! i won’t call out the specific user, but you know who you are and i’m very thankful 🙏🙏🙏
