Curious on what the mechanics are of this.

So, crossbows are listed as a 2 weapon, and listed as a viable option for staking vamps. However! pg. 221 in the core rulebook mentions that "A stake always has a damage modifier of 0, regardless of how it is applied."

My interpretation of the intent is that if you just fire the crossbow without aiming at the heart it deals that extra bit of damage, but if you attempt to use it for staking purposes, does not. Would that be correct?

If so, shame that you're sacrificing an extra point of damage if you fail, though I can understand why they'd want to further penalize it.

If you use a crossbow with wooden bolts you get the 2 damage due to the power of the crossbow.

If you use a handheld, classic wooden stake, you get no damage bonus. It’s a pretty poor melee weapon. I’ve given bonus damage if a vampire can be pinned down and the stake driven with a hammer or mallet.
