Long Time Star Trek Fan Finally Watches Voyager: Season two, episodes 12-15
Post Body

Resistance: B’Elanna and Tuvok make really excellent contrast to each other. It works very well to me.

This got so heartbreaking so quickly. My grandfather can’t remember who I am. I just felt so many things. I also loved Janeway’s line that it’s dangerous for both of them because he isn’t afraid. That’s very true. I write as I watch these and guys hearing him talk about how things used to be, the places he used to go... it’s a little devastating actually.

Oh NO. I’m fine, mother loves you, she loves your letters, she forgives you. The compassion is staggering.

What did Paris have to do with any of that?

Oh she kept the necklace!

I liked this episode. I didn’t have ton to say about it because it was really just emotional and I was just letting myself feel it. Janeway was absolutely beautiful to me in this episode. The only action I could even remotely criticize is her being willing to trade the necklace after the old man gave permission, because he was in no fit state to give that permission. But she was in an impossible place and still decided to do good and it was stellar to me.

Prototype: the visual effect at the beginning is not something I can watch, so I assume some foreshadowing happened but I didn’t get to see it.

They made the “I’m a doctor, not _____” joke, which makes me so happy. I love the interface here between engineering and medicine. Apparently, this joke was also made in Phage (pointed out on the Deta Fliers podcast) and I missed it! But that’s probably my favourite running joke in Star Trek. Julian made the same joke in Trials and Tribblations.

They were kinda dumb about this whole situation. What did they think would happen when they activated this robot? What on earth made them assume there should be no security measures whatsoever? I love Janeway’s optimism but I find myself asking “Well, what were you expecting?” on a regular basis.

Also, the robot just asked if the power module design could be modified to make them interchangeable, and the B’Elanna said no, but wait! We can redesign the power module to work in any unit! This is not the first time this has happened. Tom Actor pointed out on the podcast that in Parallax, Tom asked if he was making any sense, Janeway says no and it’s really funny, but Tom ACTUALLY made way more sense than anyone else in that scene. They do that pretty regularly on this show. The Doctor did it at least once as well.

There are some really good shocking moments in Voyager. They called a truce, attempted to stop the robots from fighting, so naturally, the robots terminated the builders. It’s so funny because the line is given so casually but B’Elanna’s expression pretty much exactly matched mine.

Alliances: Chakotay has a valid point that I’ve mentioned since episode one. Maybe it’s time we’re a little less Star Fleet and a little more human.

I’m getting a lil bored of the Kazon. They just aren’t developing. I did love Janeway in this episode, though. She was willing to listen and explore the possibility of aligning with someone if possible, but the best ally is strong moral conviction. I love the message and I love Janeway. I, again, feel like it’s worth saying that just because these human values are awesome and I like them doesn’t mean that they’re the right or the only ones. But that said I really did like those values.

Meh, this one was kind of boring. That new species is unremarkable, the Kazon are unremarkable. Janeway is the only character that really stood out here.

Threshold: everything Tom Paris does on screen is absolute gold. It was so funny watching him suddenly be on the floor of the holodeck after tearing the fake ship apart. He seems to be a bit of a jack of all trades in a way. He seemed to be reasonably versed in the engineering stuff. It’s been awhile since we had a Paris or Kim episode. But oh boy this is gonna go badly for Paris.

The doctor: “Well, I’m glad you had a good time.”

TMI, Tom.

I’m not crying yet, there’s no WAY we just lost Paris for real. Can’t Kes do something about this? With all those mental abilities we talked all about? Anyone here watch Doctor Who? Because he looks like the guys from the Mars Water episode and it’s really, really, freaking me out. Oh MAN HE HAS TWO HEARTS NOW. I’m not okay.

Wow this is, yet again, not even remotely where I thought this was going

Oh MY GOD. These blogs get less coherent with each episode. Chakotay just... decided to... leave their kids on the planet? And then Tom just casually apologizes for... uh... let’s just not get into this.

But as a message to the writers, you can’t just make three kids and walk away like that? The doctor couldn’t restore them? Janeway didn’t want to raise her own highly evolved children? Tuvok just shot both of them?

B’Elanna’s growing on me. Not by herself, but when she’s paired with other characters; Kim, Tuvok, Tom, Chakotay, pretty much everyone but Janeway. When she’s paired with Janeway they’re both a lil cliche.

I’m trying to like Neelix a little more after listening to how much Tom and Kim actors find him funny but I just don’t find him funny. I like the EMH’s sense of humor a lot better, I like Paris’s sense of humor. But I swear I’m trying to like him!
