A problem with the circle button

I recently got God of War Ghost of Sparta and God of War Chains of Olympus. In those games, in order to open chests you have to hold down the circle button, but when I do, the hud flashes and Kratos, the player character, does nothing or tries to open it but keeps getting interrupted, this also happens with also actions in both God of War and other games when I need to hold circle. It is only the circle button doing this. Please help.
