Title says it all, but there's a few different stories to tell here.

• I've seen Higurashi so I know all the crazy twists and turns it takes, but over the years I keep consistently hearing high praise for the VN. What's stopped me every time from picking things up, however, is the nature of a story like Higurashi. To know how crazy things get while it's building it up for you and trying to be facetious about it makes me wonder if I would enjoy reading it.
• Not just this last year I read Steins;Gate having only seen less than half of the anime and I wholeheartedly think it was the right decision to read through the story rather than watch it.
  
• A few years back I ended up getting the major twists to G-Senjou no Maou spoiled for me. I tried going through the VN but knowing the truth of things the whole time made the story actually unbearable, I dropped it about halfway through the common route.

My issue is I'm cautious because I've been burned before on this exact kind of situation. Is Higurashi the kind of story that successive re-exposure to the story reveals new and meaningful things? Will a (somewhat blurry, I watched the anime a solid 4 years ago at this point) understanding of the core plot enhance the narrative or only serve to deflate the mystery and story being built?
