Over the past few months here on /r/virtualreality, we've seen a lot of articles come through where new technologies have been, or are being, developed with specific applications in mind. The US Military is developing avatars that share the physical restrictions of their real-life counterparts. Burn Center patients have found relief through therapy in SnowWorld, where the environment distracts them from their real world pain. A line of pop-up books engage augmented reality to create a much more effective learning experience.
In addition to these efforts, new uses for existing worlds continue to be found. Second Life is a popular platform for academic studies. This generation's modding community, working on present-day titles like Minecraft and Skyrim, will be the next generation's game developers and designers. Even outdated titles continue to find new life by the creative brilliance of enthusiasts, pushing the limits of technology and expanding our collective idea of what virtual reality is, and what it can be.
All of what I've discussed above are applications that we have right now for virtual environments. Between content creation, gaming, medical applications, military applications, social applications, and research, I'm sure many of us here on /r/virtualreality have some experiences and preferred applications of the technology. But what in the future? Given your present background, what would you like to see come from virtual reality in the future? Would you like to see the applications above extended -- perhaps in a specific way -- or something new entirely?
