Hey everyone, over the past few months we've been noticing an uptick in Let's Play content on this subreddit. This content is typically posted as a YouTube link without comment, by a redditor that is not a member of this community. This content is then quickly downvoted and ignored, although it may stay on the first page or two for several days due to our low traffic.
This situation is detrimental to both the LPer (downvotes, negative attention) and to our subreddit (clutter), and I would like to see this change because LPers have something more valuable to this audience (a discussion forum) than their video content -- the ability to discuss their continual, first hand experiences with new VR content.
With that in mind, I propose that we consolidate all of these submissions into a weekly sticky thread will be created by AutoModerator. The goal being to aggregate all LP/stream (and similar content in that spirit, up to the discretion of the moderators). In addition, redditors submitting this content will be obligated to:
- Submit their link directly to the weekly thread as a top-level comment. New LP link posts directly to the subreddit will be removed with a comment redirecting the submitter to this weekly thread.
- In the same comment, open a discussion about the game and your experiences in the linked video. This can be achieved by describing the game and giving a summary of your experience, an anecdote related to the game, or some other blurb that can reasonably be used to start a discussion. Submissions that do not promote discussion will be removed. This doesn't have to be crazy or thorough; even a couple of sentences would suffice, so long as it respected the spirit of fostering discussion.
- Be available to answer questions about their submission and engage with discussion in our community. Content creators that submit a link and do not engage with our community will not be allowed back to participate in subsequent weeks. This shouldn't be a crazy obligation either; just remember to log into Reddit once in a while and check your inbox for replies at least once a week.
I think in the worst-case, where this is a total flop and nobody engages in discussion, we still end up with a cleaner front-page and a single thread of new video experiences with VR content every week -- that still sounds pretty cool to me!
I'd like to open this up to comment now and get feedback from you, our community. Us moderators are ultimately just the janitors here, and if this is overwhelmingly unpopular we won't impose it on you. But we need to hear that from you to know that, so let us know what you think! We're also open to other suggestions or related feedback/ideas, so please feel free to mention those as well.
Thanks!
