Why's it called popping the cherry?

This might be a dumb question but I always wondered and been too afraid to ask. I know popping the cherry means losing your virginity but why do they call it that? Why do they call it popping the cherry? What's the cherry that's being popped and how do you pop it? I'm trying to think of what looks like a cherry? Whatever it is, the thought of popping something down there doesn't sound like fun. It makes me think of popping a pimple. Am I being too literal in my thinking here? What am I missing? While I'm here, what's a v-crusher and how's that different than a v-slayer?
