Purchasing a beginner violin - decent, cheap brands?

I want to purchase a 3/4 size violin for my child, who will be just beginning. I don't want to rent because the cost is absurd (over $100/year) and the child will move onto a full-size in a few years anyway.
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with buying violins from amazon? I'm looking at All Day Music and Mendini, for example.
