Trouble with foot pedal plug for Featherweight 221

I got a new foot pedal for my featherweight 221(April 22nd 1947 batch) and the plug for the new pedal doesn't fit my machine. I presume it's for a different model, but unfortunately the new plug just says "Singer featherweight" on it so I don't know what it's meant for.

The new plug has metal jackets inside, the old one does not, otherwise they appear visually about the same size.

The real question is how can I ensure I get a new pedal with the correct plug, but I'm also curious what this "wrong" plug is for and whether I'm just missing something.
