Rollback to vim 8 to use ALE?

ALE's GitHub page specifically mentions compatibility with vim 8, and doesn't mention vim 9. Do I need to roll back my version of vim? Or if they are incompatible, should I consider a different linter?
Also, I am working on Mac OSX which comes pre-installed with vim, and I don't see an obvious way to roll back if I need to.
