There's so many, and some of these honestly stay with me and gnaw at my gut for days after they take place. Starting with the Jarl's murdered sons, some of the worst atrocities the show portrays happens to the young, innocent, and helpless.
Obviously Siggy's death by neglect hurt so much to watch. I had a lump in my throat when she was found by Sigurd and her death was cruelly laughed at by Aslaug and Ivar. That was heartbreaking.
When Ragnar drowned Yidu... that was a tough one to swallow. Especially when he was trying to distract his sons to that fact afterwards. You have to wonder if the man truly is a sociopath sometimes.
But the worst for me was when Ragnar rejected Magnus, and Aethelwulf threw him out. The way the boy sobbed for Aethelwulf to let him stay, and hugged him like he was the only father he had ever known, only to be thrown to the ground and threatened with death, it just killed me. This one makes the least sense to me- Ecbert and familia took care of the boy, feeding, clothing, and educating him amongst their own heirs. When Ragnar rejected him the boy had no status and no claim. But even if the Saxons who raised him didn't want to bother with him any more... why not make him a servant, or send him to another household to be one? After all, Aethelwulf 'loved' the boy's mother, and he's an affectionate father towards his wife's bastard son. Why, then, did he treat the boy he presumably took care of since infancy with so much cruelty? It makes NO sense and it made me so sad.
These all get my goat the most because there is NO justice for any of the characters. They're all tossed aside and forgotten about. The neglect, abandonment and cruelty portrayed children especially in the show makes me want to cry sometimes. What are your saddest/most shocking moments in the show?
