Media clips for internal videos - Fair use?
Post Body

Hi all,

I work in video production, tending towards marketing and internal videos. I used to work in PR and made tons of internal videos that would include short clips of movies, commercials, etc generally for comedic purposes but not promoting or licensed by the actual companies. My understanding was that since these were purely internal, it was fair game.

My new org is actively using terminology that references a certain sci-fi property, but recontextualized, and only for internal content. For one of the videos, I thought it would be a good opportunity to use a couple of clips (15 seconds all together) in a moment of the video that is distinguishing what the group is doing from the actual property (there's a voiceover that supports it).

A manager is nervous about using the clips though, even though the actual name of the video is still a licensed property. Again, this is all purely internal. Is there any hard line about this kind of usage? I'm looking for some footing to discuss it with the group.

TLDR: Can you use a short clip of a movie in an internal marketing video legally?

Thanks!
