Help me choose PC laptops for a high school media arts program

Hello,
I need to put together an equipment list for a rural high school's new media arts program. What are some relatively inexpensive laptops you would recommend for basic editing and design? I think I'll be fine choosing equipment, but I've been an apple user for years so I would appreciate your help choosing a PC.
I think laptops are best so the kids can collaborate and move around more, and rent them out for homework if needed. They have not given me a budget yet.
