Army start of battle size

Does anyone know how to increase battle size I have the largest army on the planet but even in maxed out battle groups my generals are starting fights with 1,000 no matter the odds. Even in a fight of 5 to 1 I will see my guy fight them to the double digits and then lose.
What’s the point of a huge army? I out number them 3 to 1 and then take only 1000 men into battle over and over and over again. Even one know what the problem is?
