Hi everyone! Iām almost done with my pre reqs to apply to vet school in the US and just wanted to pick a couple of yāallās brains. Like many I started as a regular bio major to start accumulating pre reqs to apply but then also ended up taking classes towards the major that werenāt necessary to apply to vet school. Even after doing so I felt like I should just scrap finishing the bio degree and just focus on the pre reqs which is what Iāve been doing the last couple semesters. Iāll turn 26 this year and havenāt been able to go full time every semester so Iām obviously behind (or at least not where Iād like to be which contributed to me ānot wasting timeā and just focusing on the pre reqs). I feel like Iāve been in school forever already (6 years), havenāt earned my bachelors yet and have nothing tangible to show for it (I am totally fine with all the work entailed with becoming a vet, I just want to start down that road already lol). Recently Iāve been considering trying to bang out my bachelors by going full time for a couple semesters, graduate and then apply to vet school so I have something to fall back on in case I donāt get in the first time (which I know statistically I most likely wouldnāt). Now Iām really trying to think about what could help me stand out from the other applicants as well as give me a degree to fall back on that I enjoy. Iām considering changing my degree to microbiology with maybe a minor in chemistry. Iād even consider getting a BS in chemistry. So Iām wondering if a micro bio degree with a minor in chem or bachelors in just micro or a BS in chem would look better than a regular bio degree on a vet school application? Or would it probably not make a difference enough for me to switch things around now? Experience wise Iāve worked at multiple clinics as a vet assistant/tech, worked closely with a local animal rescue as a foster and admin, was president for 2 years of a student organization at my university that did TNR, fostering friendly strays, fed the campus cats, provided education for students/college community on responsible pet care, etc that Iād plan to put on my application. Iām especially passionate about shelter medicine and rescue work and hope to focus on those later down my veterinary career. Thank you for any input!!
