I just finished season 3 for the first time. And tbh I can kinda see why it was canceled. Even without touching the finale, which I have a lot of opinions on but Iāll save that for another post, the season had a lot of issues. I wanted to talk about these points and see what you all think about them. As always, SPOILER ALERTS (up to season 3). Iāll also come back to this and edit it some more because of the time (and I want to get in as much as I can remember before I go to bed)
Plot(s)/storyline:
-The first half of the plot was good I guess. It was something that Veronica felt personally responsible and as someone who was raped twice (yes Duncan raped her but we are not debating on this post about that) she felt morally obligated to help her ānew friendā out.
-The second half was really short. I kind of knew who were the party involved, which felt more predictable than even lesser cases from previous seasons. -The last five episodes felt like they were trying to throw things to the wall to see what fits. Some of the episodes were great in highlighting some characters that have been all but forgotten this season. The unexpected cancelation kind of help the show do 360ā¢: she started off as an outcast and ended the series as an outcast.
-We never know what came of Loganās father (yes I know what happened to him but no other character in the show mentions it).
-Kendall was seen as a bigger plot the first couple of episodes and then forgotten. She was mentioned in a brief moment at the end but it was really an afterthought.
-Having so much focus on Veronicaās love life instead of her cases really did not help. I felt that she had less love drama when she was in HS (or maybe thatās my perception of season 1). -Having Lamb killed off and give the position to Keith as oppose to him winning it fairly made it bittersweet.
-On that note, killing off so many bad people as oppose to letting them be found guilty of their crimes was nice at first but after it happening so many times it felt unfair (and I mean the main antagonists and not lesser bad characters from minor cases).
Character Development: This was my main complaint throughout this season overall.
-Parker had no development whatsoever. I didnāt know who she was prior to the rape and I still donāt know who she is. I donāt know her likes or dislikes, her aspirations or even what her life was before coming to Hersh other than she does not like being controlled by her parents. Parker was there to befriend Veronica and she ended up being a white version of Jackie. I swear she didnāt have any conversations other than to party or boys. I did want to see her get through the trauma she experience and that was never even hinted at. It felt like the writers wanted to have a Samantha (sex and the city reference) on the show only to punish her afterwards for being sex positive. I feel sorry the writers in the show could not make her more complex.
-Mac had some development but she had the same issues as Parker. I thought they would have her process the loss of Beaver and that never happened. She also never went back to talk to her bio parents or her sister. She was just the friendly IT girl. At least I like that she had some men problems of herself.
-Dick never did anything other than remind Veronica, Logan and every other girl in the campus he is Dick. I felt that the last couple of episodes could have helped him address his own relationship with his father but I guess that was all resolved out of screen...
-I think Logan had a lot of character development.... that later went out the window when he became this angry person again. Considering he dated Veronica for a while know youād think he knows that she can dish out revenge on herself (though that fight scene seemed very vague; it may lead one to think Veronica wanted Logan to punch him all along). What I donāt like is that Logan never got motivation to be anything other than a former starās father. It felt like he matured more the first couple of episodes in season 3 but then went back to being himself in season 2.
-I like that Keith was able to go on the grey areas of law to help Veronica and shows he is willing to put his daughter first always. But I hate he constantly brushes off his own romantic relationships for the sake of his daughter. -Veronica was tricky to pinpoint if there was any character development. A nice comment she mentioned was that it is hard to believe in those who have your back and I think that was a core belief of her. I donāt think she ever move past the multiple betrayals. Another personal thing I didnāt like is that she was seen as a badass but in reality the writers did not know how to make her a true badass. They relied way too much on the damsel in distress archetype. By the amount of times sheād gotten in trouble, you would imagine she would take some karate classes or something and Phoebe herself up (Charmed reference). The taser was a nice addition but she needed more upgrades.
-I felt bad for Piz at the beginning cuz I knew he would be the force love triangle that no one wanted but happened anyways.
-Wallace is there... ... ... ...He was the token black friend and an afterthought in the season. I honestly don't remember him doing anything. I do give him points for providing advice to Piz. I wanted to see him get his confidence back in engineering but I guess I'll settle for a toy plane on the beach.
-I understand the show was canceled but it felt very early on the writers did not know how to show growth in these characters.
