Tomatillo Trouble

This is my first year growing tomatillo, so I am by no means an expert. I came to check on my garden after two days and found that one of my plants had basically melted? It was the happiest plant in my garden two days ago I apologize for the horrible picture quality, my phone is a potato .

A bunch of mold at the base of the stem

the end of most of the stems rotted and fell off

Up close of the leaves

And the whole plant next to its healthy brother. It looks like I've been not watering, but this was taken after a week of rain everyday. Is there anything I can do? Should I pull it? Is it contagious?
