About to go back again in July.
Just wanted to share a quick budget-friendly trip I like to take from Vegas. Maybe other locals in the group might find value in it if you're looking for a quick budget trip that's not too far or long (2 - 4 nights). Usually take this trip twice a year. Last did it during F1 last year to watch the finish of the Baja1000 and will go again end of July.
One thing I love about Vegas is the international airport. Can go anywhere and many good deals.
LAS to SAN (San Diego) 1hr flight~. Typically $45-$70~ roundtrip on Spirit or Frontier (Ya ya I know). I've booked some last minute ones a day before for $100~ I just bring a backpack with my small laptop and a couple articles of clothes and do laundry there. I use Google Flights.
San Diego Flyer shuttle (free) from SD airport to SD Trolley. Take the Trolley Blue line for $2.50 to San Ysidro Border Crossing.
Walk 20~ minutes to the ABC bus station in Tijuana and take the ABC bus ($15~ one way) 2 hrs to Ensenada. Sit on the right side for ocean views
Once in Ensenada, I take the little white combi (colectivo) bus for about $.50 -- 10 minutes outside Ensenada to a little Airbnb on the beach I usually get, $80 - $100/ night (depending on season). Can find cheaper in the city.
I like going to Ensenada. A sleepy little beach town 2 hrs south of the border.
Fun Vegas History Fact: Ensenada is where the hotel Playa del Ensenada is (photo above, now a civic center) which was the inspiration for the El Cortez on Fremont. Marion Hicks and J.C Grayson are said to have liked the hotel in Ensenada, obtained the construction plans and based the El Cortez design off of it. Apparently, the margarita was invented in Ensenada... Either way, they make a delicious one at the old hotel in Ensenada. Also be sure to stop by the original Hussongs. Oldest bar in Baja and there's another location in Mandalay Bay, minus the chickens and pigeons.
